2008 predictions: As the New Year dawns, fleets will be gearing up for a fresh set of challenges. Changes to legislation, risk management and technological improvements are issues which could dominate the headlines. Here FN gathers the views of key industry leaders on what they believe to be the highlights and main problems of the coming year.

Fleet funding: This regular feature focuses on the different vehicle funding methods available to fleets. This feature is in addition to the monthly leasing panel, which offers benchmarked leasing rates and centres on different popular fleet vehicles and sectors each month.

Fleet management: The feature will look at all aspects of fleet management. Issues covered will include ways to help fleet managers manage vehicles more effectively more effectively, good management practice and effective management case studies.

Green transport This feature focuses on any aspect of running a green fleet. Issues could include alternative fuels, how driving styles can affect fuel economy, alternative transport, such as bus, train or even cycle. New technology will also be included.

Daily rental: Controlling daily rental spend can have a major impact on fleet budgets. This feature, published four times a year, covers latest developments in the industry and key issues facing fleet decision-makers, such as insurance, dealing with damage claims and using rental to effectively replace permanent, but under-utilised, pool vehicles.

Risk management: This is one of the most important issues facing the modern fleet decision-maker. Running four times a year, this feature will examine options for creating a safer fleet, such as on-road driver training, desk-based training and areas such as vehicle security and claims processing. New legislative developments will also be covered along with any new services allowing decision-makers to reduce the risk drivers face on the road.

Remarketing/refurbishment: From the moment a new business car arrives on the fleet, an employer and driver can have a massive impact on its value at disposal time. This feature examines the different disposal routes fleets can use to maximise their residual values. It will also cover residual value forecasts, the state of the current used car market and interviews with key figures.
Vehicle refurbishment could look at areas such as ‘smart’ repairs, valeting and car care.

Fleet services: If a company provides an aftermarket service to fleet decision-makers, it will be covered in this quarterly feature. Anything from ordering systems and windscreen replacement to maintenance and warranty issues could be covered.

Fleet technology: This feature will look at the vast range of hi-tech services and devices available to help a fleet run smoothly, from software, to e-commerce and general technology issues, such as video-conferencing. Other issues covered in this twice-yearly feature could include how technology affects fleets, for example through congestion charges to tracking and vehicle safety systems.

Career Development: Fleet decision-makers have an uphill struggle to make sure their voice is heard and their true value is understood by employers. This annual feature looks at ways of forwarding the fleet manager’s career, and could include the training available and the benefits it brings, along with the best practice advice and training available on dealing with some of the trickiest parts of the job, from taxation to coping with downsizing or large scale redundancies.

State of the industry: A quarterly feature which will analyse the state of the fleet industry. It will provide insight from experts in all sectors ranging from fleet funding and management to green transport and remarketing.

Fuel management: An in-depth twice-yearly look at fuel use, taking particular note of the management and budgetary importance of close monitoring of fuel costs and vehicle economy.

Tyre management: With the cost of tyres one of the major contributors to the wholelife costs of a fleet vehicle, and with tyres an intrinsic element of a car’s safety, this feature takes a look at what is available, new initiatives and what related services are available in the market, from fast-fit to tyre checking.

Luxury fleets: An annual look at the most luxurious and desirable vehicles on offer for chief executives, managing directors and high-end user choosers.

International fleet focus: A look at issues affecting the international fleet market. This could cover such issues as taxation, legislation, individual fleet markets and best practice.

Fleet legislation: Legislative changes affecting fleets are analysed along with the effect they will have on fleet policies. This annual feature will also look at forthcoming legislation which might have an affect on the future management of fleets.

Employee benefits: This is one-off feature looks at the wider world of benefits that might offer an alternative to the company car for employees. Ranging from health club membership, medical insurance and even salary increases. It could also examine the changing shape of car provision.
