My last report contained fulsome praise for the Golf and it seems I’m not alone in being a fan as you, the readers of Fleet News, have voted it your company car of the year for 2010.
I’m not surprised and from the feedback given to the judges of the awards, you appear to agree with me on the Golf’s finer points – low wholelife costs and its aspirational status.
You also praised the levels of comfort and refinement, and this is where the Golf is way ahead of the competition.
My fiancee has an M Sport-equipped BMW 1 Series, and driving the two cars back-to-back shows the differences.
Our Golf, even in GT trim, is much more comfortable and it’s also quieter when on the move.
In fact, the Golf is very impressive in the NVH area.
Much was made of it at the car’s launch, but it really is very quiet on the move.
This was brought home to me one day when I switched the radio off.
Aside from a little tyre roar there was serenity in the cabin – no whistling wind around the A-pillar and low engine noise intrusion.
And this was on the motorway, not pottering down a back road.
I regularly cover 180 miles a day and the Golf is an ideal partner – quiet, refined, well equipped and frugal.
In my last report I reported a 57.7mpg average and it’s dipped to 55.3mpg, although I’ve been doing more shorter journeys in the past month.
