Damian James, chairman, ACFO

What is your biggest achievement in your current role?
In my day job I was recruited to manage transport and fleet for Bracknell Forest Council. I was promoted 18 months ago and now I’m also responsible for post, facilities, couriers and the print room. My other biggest achievement is being voted on to the board of directors of ACFO three years ago and then being elected chairman in 2013.

Who has had the biggest influence on your career?
My old boss who was always very encouraging and supportive.

What’s your dream holiday?
Probably the south of France. I spent two years living there and really enjoyed the climate, food and lifestyle. It’s always good to go back and catch up with friends.

Who was the last person you received a text message from?
My wife, saying that someone was coming to pick up all of the cardboard boxes – we have recently moved house.

What is your favourite sitcom?
It has to be Only Fools and Horses – Batman and Robin – it still has me smiling as I write this!

What is your favourite film?
Shawshank Redemption. It’s one of the only films that is just as good as the book it is based on. I love the fact that someone can be so patient and still succeed.

You are on a desert island – what three things would you take with you?
Apart from my wife and two daughters, if I had to be practical I would take a penknife, a water still and a large hat.

When was the last time you took public transport and where were you going?
I went into London a few weeks ago, which is a regular trip for me. The ACFO board generally meets in London as it’s central to everyone.

If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would buy?
I would pay off my mortgage. That would be a good feeling.

What was your biggest mistake in business and what did you learn from it?
I trialled LPG in 10 vans and it was a disaster. Sometimes you have to get your fingers burned to understand the reality of an
alternative.

What is your best childhood memory?
I was brought up on an old farm so spent hours in the woods making dens and bows and arrows.

What is your favourite dish at a restaurant?
I really like duck as I don’t have it very often in the UK. When I lived in France I ate it frequently as confit du canard.

How would you describe your leadership style?
I would like to think that I’m easy to deal with, logical and sensible. I do, however, have a limit to my patience which can surprise some people.

When did you last feel guilty about the environment?
I drive more than I should. There are times when I could walk or cycle, but it’s easier to go in the car.

Who was your childhood hero?
This was probably Tintin. I read all of the books many times over.

Which historical character do you most identify with?
Probably someone like Major Pat Reid who was one of a few escapees from Colditz during the Second World War. I do feel like I have to burrow through the ground sometimes before I can escape.

What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Be more confident in yourself and your abilities. This will open up a lot more possibilities and opportunities for you.

What is the one object you couldn’t live without?
The internet. What did we do without it?

If you could work in another profession what would it be?
I always liked the idea of working for a professional grand prix motorcycle team.

What is your dream car?
I am not really fussed by most impractical supercars, so would prefer something like a new Clio Renaultsport 200 Turbo.

What has been the most pivotal moment in your life?
It has to be getting married to my wife Mel. It was the most sensible thing I have ever done.
