A detailed study into the environmental, energy and social costs of automotive manufacturing has named General Motors the world’s most wasteful manufacturer and Toyota the cleanest and greenest.
The study, coordinated by Queen’s University, Belfast, concluded GM wasted £8.7bn in environmental and social costs, while Toyota saved £4.6bn compared to the industry mean.
Queens’ Prof Frank Figge said dirty car makers could reduce costs by green investments: “They are wasting resources and that is costly. Wasting energy [with] high energy prices is not a good idea.”
