Goodyear has been presented with the Environmental Award at the 2010 Fleet News awards.

Goodyear is one of the world’s largest tyre companies, employing around 70,000 people and manufacturing its products in more than 60 facilities in 26 countries.
The company prides itself on protecting the environment. Tests by its tyre evaluation department reveal that its EfficientGrip tyre provides 15% better rolling resistance and 25% more miles.

However, Goodyear’s approach to sustaining the environment doesn’t stop there. It has also reduced its use of solvents in both manufacturing and process maintenance. In 2008, solvent use was reduced by 18% compared to 2007 levels.

Goodyear has also developed an environmental management system to go beyond the baseline guidance set through its ISO 1401 programme. In addition, it employs environmental professionals in all of its manufacturing facilities to determine the best combination of raw materials for optimum product performance, while consuming energy and natural resources as efficiently as possible.

It sets itself similarly high standards on recycling and disposal, with its End-Of-Life Tyres (ELT) programme.Since 2005, more than 84% of ELTs in the US, European Union and Japan were used for energy recovery or other beneficial purposes.

Judges’ comments
A closely-fought contest between the two tyre manufacturers, but Goodyear edged it for offering two tyres offering an environment benefit: EfficientGrip, its low rolling resistance fuel saver, and OptiGrip, whose technology allows fleets to more safely run tyres down to the 1.6mm legal limit, hence reducing tyre disposal.

Michelin Tyre was highly commended by the judges.
