Telematics to give patients improved service

Torbay Hospital’s patient transport department has introduced a telematics vehicle management system to improve efficiency of its service.

The stand-alone department, which has 24 vehicles, is responsible for picking up patients to attend hospital appointments.

Connections installed the new tracking system, which logs the initial call from the patient to arrival at hospital.

Previously patient lists had to be manually transferred to itineraries. Now bookings are entered straight into the system which then handles the job from start to finish.

The project was pioneered by head of department, Mike Andrews, and assistant managers Andy Knowles and Tony Eatherington who explained: “We were seeking a complete end-on-end solution which should also help us in our duty of care, saves on paperwork and hopefully decrease our carbon footprint.”

Partner at Connections, Colin Walker, explained: “It’s a complete stand-alone back-office system which tracks the entire patient contact,.

“It will provide greater protection for drivers and improve the department’s efficiency, reducing man hours and paperwork. Jobs are assigned directly by the system to the most suitable vehicle, reducing community costs.”
