Automotive data specialists at HPI have named the Citroen C-Zero as the cheapest used electric vehicle to run.

With the number of plug-in and hybrid vehicles on Britain’s roads more than doubling in the last year from 20,522 to 45,236, HPI examined which models provide the lowest running costs.

The analysis examined a range of factors including; monthly running costs, cost per mile, service and maintenance, depreciation and insurance to calculate a total cost of motoring.

The best buys with monthly running costs:

●        Citroen C-Zero £410

●        Peugeot Ion hatchback £413

●        Volkswagen E-Up £526

Philip Nothard, consumer and retail specialist at HPI, said: “In the UK market it is clear there remains an ‘apprehension’ from used buyers around electric vehicles.

"Range anxiety continues to be a big hurdle, along with charging network coverage. But for a motorist that wants to make the leap there are some good value options out there.

“And while the didn’t make the value list, prestige options such as the Tesla Model S and BMW i8 provide good value used choices that also turn heads.”
