The chief adjudicator for the Traffic Penalty Tribunal (TPT), Caroline Sheppard, has been awarded an OBE for her services to motorists.

The award was announced on June 17 and recognises individuals who have excelled in various endeavours while bringing distinction to British life.

Having started as a chief parking adjudicator in 1992, Sheppard became Chief Adjudicator of the TPT in 1999.

Sheppard headed up a team of independent lawyers who dealt with appeals against parking and bus lane penalties issued by councils (outside London) in England and Wales, and penalties imposed by Dart Charge for not paying the Dartford Crossing toll.

She is passionate about technology and innovation to improve the tribunal experience for all parties, as a result of which,  TPT has transformed its appeals service.

“I have devoted much of my judicial career to promoting access to civil justice for motorists and to working within an adjudication system that is fair, proportionate and transparent. It is marvellous to see this being recognised with this Honour,” said Sheppard.

Caroline’s OBE is the crowning achievement of 2017 as she celebrates the 25th anniversary of her appointment as the first adjudicator and in March 2017 she was awarded the lifetime achievement award at the British Parking Awards.
