Fleet Source has been selected by TfL as a provider of its TruckSmart driver training, a seven-hour training course for commercial HGV drivers.

The FORS accredited course will be rolled out from October and is aimed at all commercial HGV drivers and fleet managers.

TruckSmart focuses on the importance of driving roadworthy HGVs and the role of the driver in ensuring that vehicles and loads are safe and legal at all times.

The course tracks a series of five themes:

Know it: a safe vehicle matters

Check it: walk around before, during and after journeys

Load it: plan and position your load safely

Secure it: secure your load correctly

Report it: record problems and take action

TfL’s freight and fleet project manager Sam Weller said: “TruckSmart represents another important innovation and addition to the FORS Professional suite of driver training programs aimed at improving driver professionalism and helping reduce incidents on today’s roads.”

Fleet Source were chosen by TfL due to a process that measured tender submission against a set criteria and because they already deliver TfL’s Safe Urban Driving courses.

Weller said: “We are pleased to announce that Fleet Source has been awarded the contract to deliver the TruckSmart program and as TfL’s principal contract for the delivery of our driver training programs, we look forward to working with them on the rollout of this new initiative.”

Fleet Source’s managing director Nick Caesari said: “We feel that TruckSmart is essential training for all HGV commercial drivers, regardless of their area of operation.

“The training will raise levels of knowledge to enhance awareness of the importance of HGV safety and their own roles and responsibilities in ensuring that HGVs are safe and roadworthy at all times.”
