Despite the abundance of fleet-related apps on the market, the majority are still aimed at drivers rather than fleet managers, with just four out of the 22 featured in this article designed for the use of fleet managers and three intended for both drivers and managers.

Given the fairly small representation of tools for fleet managers, it is interesting to note from a poll conducted by Fleet News that they rate what is available: 45.5% of respondents use them, 31.8% would consider doing so and only 22.7% would never use them.

The versatility and range of these apps also varies considerably, ranging from car maintenance reminders, through expense claims facilitators to vehicle tracking and traffic report instruments.

Most practical are the accident management tools, which guide drivers through the right procedures for reporting an accident, prompting them to take photographs of the damage and location and, in some cases, providing a helpline.

Less crucial from a fleet management perspective but definitely beguiling, Volkswagen’s configurator allows aspiring drivers to choose a model and equip it as required, even down to the engine, complete with details of CO2 emissions, fuel consumption and other practicalities, plus torque and further fodder for petrolheads.
