How much of a challenge is keeping a check on grey fleet drivers and their vehicles?

Steve Haigh: As fleet managers, we have a responsibility to ensure drivers’ own vehicles used for business are suitable and should see a copy of the service schedule or some form of record to ensure they are properly maintained.

Emma Osborn: There must be a limit to where your responsibility ends and where the drivers’ starts.

Geoff Wright: No-one has actually been prosecuted yet for corporate manslaughter relating to driving on business.

Damion Bennett, company car compliance advisor, GE Capital: No matter who the members of staff are, these checks should be carried out.

A lot of it is down to education about cash allowances.

We have to work with those people who have got expertise in these areas and ask how we can educate that population.

Leasing companies have those models and we can work out which would suit drivers best, and this has worked for us.

Steven Thompson, head of transport, West Yorkshire Police: Having a grey fleet policy will help, but you must also ensure you are managing that policy.

Rob Paddock, distribution and logistics manager, Commercial Group: For vehicles out of manufacturer warranty we have been able to talk to local garages and help source replacement parts for grey fleet vehicles at a reduced cost and lower labour rates.

This encourages drivers to ensure their cars are properly maintained.
