On the ‘dashboard’ area of the system we have reminders for all road tax expiry and MoTs.”

The Norse Group recently switched from using Microsoft Access to fleet management software.

Tina Higlett, assistant manager fleet, says: “If I wanted to see when a service was due on the Access database I had to run a query whereas this system flags up when a service is due.”

The group decided it was worthwhile investing in fleet software when it began doing in-house servicing.

Kelly Communications and Roger Bullivant also use fleet software to manage their workshops, while Chelmsford Borough Council switched last year to boost its efficiencies and operational processes.

“We have an in-house garage and use software to create job cards and invoice customers,” says Franklin.

He also points to the risk management benefits.

“We have cash allowance drivers as well as people using private vehicles so we use fleet software to record insurance, MoT and servicing details,” he says.

“We can also see high-risk drivers or drivers who have a lot of points on their licence.”

Supplier Jaama points to the proliferation of data, which requires systems and processes to support the control and management of the fleet.

“The priority is exception reporting - identifying the worst elements to take action,” says Jaama managing director Jason Francis.

“You shouldn’t try to look at everything.”
