It means the only time a van touches a main dealer is if it’s a warranty-related issue.

It’s a similar story when it comes to outsourcing.

“Take accident management, for example,” says Skuse. “The repairers can’t earn from parts, because I supply them. I won’t let them earn from daily rental, because that’s an incentive for them to keep the van off the road.

"They also want to put our vans into approved repairers, while we want to put them into people who are buying from us.

“If we did outsource we would have to do it on a case-by-case basis and would end up paying a premium.

"Given the number of accidents we have, it’s much easier for me to have a resource in my office who is dedicated solely to managing every accident.”

As well as believing he runs one of the cheapest fleets in the country, Skuse says it’s also one of the safest fleets he has managed.

“When I joined the fleet in September 2012, we were at just over 1,200 vehicles. We’re now just over 2,000, but that incremental size of increase has not been reflected in the numbers of claims,” he says. “The proportion of claims is actually coming down.”

Currently, the company suffers about four incidents per day but Skuse has introduced a series of measures which is beginning to pay dividends.

Vehicles are fitted with rear parking sensors and front-facing cameras, which were part funded by Euro Car Parts’s insurer Aviva, in order to keep damage costs down.

The cameras, which record both voice and motion, were bought outright and fitted in June last year.

“We’re already seeing a much better trend in at-fault claims versus non-fault,” says Skuse. “It also has the effect of changing the behaviour of drivers.”

In the event of a collision, a claim form must be filled in by the branch and sent to the central fleet team along with the camera footage.

“It enables us to both see and hear what actually happened when the accident took place,” continues Skuse.

If the driver is found to be responsible he faces a £250 charge towards the cost of repair. That is taken out of his salary and can be spread over three months if required.

Skuse adds: “We’ve also implemented several tools as part of a deal with our broker AON.
