THE Government's £2 million Christmas anti-drink and drive campaign saw a 22% reduction in the number of positive breath tests and a 5% reduction in accidents, according to figures for the 43 police forces and England and Wales.

A total of 16,795 tests were taken after accidents compared with 15,445 over Christmas 1997 of which 1,081 were positive (1,430). The number of other accidents fell from 6,881 to 6,444.
