AUDI has dropped the eight lowest selling A4 models from its line-up in a move aimed at simplifying its range for 2000 and has slashed up to £1,800 off some models. With the line-up 'too confusing for customers', the A4 1.6 SE, 1.8, 2.4, 2.8, 1.9 TDI SE, 1.9 TDI (110) and 2.5 TDI saloon and Avant models have been deleted. The remaining 22 models benefit from specification upgrades.

Prices of some models have been cut, with the 2.5 TDI quattro Avant reduced by £1,876 to £26,657 on-the-road. Savings on other models include the 1.8 SE saloon down £855 to £20,250 and the 1.9 TDI 110 SE saloon reduced by £1,529 to £20,850. On-the-road prices for the A4 range include: 1.6-litre saloon £18,050, 1.8 SE saloon £20,250, 2.4 SE saloon £22,850, 1.8T Sport quattro saloon £27,150, 1.9 TDI 90 Avant £20,477, 2.5 TDI SE Avant £25,157 and S4 quattro Avant £37,522.

The A6 range has also been restructured, with quattro four-wheel drive available on the 1.8T and 2.4. Quattro versions of the 2.5 TDI get a 180bhp engine. There are also specification upgrades. On-the-road prices for the A6 have been reduced for some models, including the 2.5 TDI SE saloon down £1,018 to £27,050 and the 1.9 TDI SE saloon down £964 to £25,450. New additions include the 1.8T quattro saloon at £26,650 and the SE at £27,600. The revised ranges go on sale from January 1.
