RENAULT has launched a 100bhp diesel version of the Megane 1.5dCi which will go on sale in 2004, offering more than 60mpg and low carbon dioxide emissions.

Based on the existing 82bhp version, power is increased by 18bhp while torque is improved by 11lb-ft. Official figures for combined fuel consumption put the Megane at 62.8mpg with carbon dioxide emissions at 119g/km.

Prices for the uprated diesel engine start at £13,450 on-the-road for the Megane hatchback. Renault claims none of its immediate rivals can balance such low fuel consumption with a high power output.
