Hybrid launch

TOYOTA has launched its sixth hybrid-powered vehicle – a full-size MPV for the Japanese market.

The Alphard uses the Toyota Hybrid System comprising a 2.4-litre petrol engine and front and rear electric motors with a continuously variable transmission and four-wheel drive.

There are no plans to sell the Alphard outside Japan, although Toyota's new Prius will go on sale in the UK early next year, followed by the Lexus RX300 Hybrid Synergy Drive later in 2004.
