Serious fears have been raised at the European Parliament about the Galileo satellite network project and its associated navigation and automatic tolling services.

In a resolution, MEPs were “deeply concerned” because “concession negotiations have been at a standstill for several months” because of disputes over allocation of construction and commissioning work.

The parliament also voiced fears about the increasing overall costs. Concerns that Galileo may not even go ahead in its current form have prompted MEPs to ask the European Commission for “alternative scenarios for the realisation of the programme, especially for costs, risk and affordability”.

Regardless, Galileo’s 2011 launch date may now be missed, MEPs noted.
