More than 60 internal combustion engine, hybrid, battery electric and fuel cell cars and vans took part in the first event of its kind the day before the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.

Fleet News took part in the RAC Future Car Challenge driving a Toyota Auris Hybrid, and achieved 71.3mpg on the 57-mile route, while the best result for an Auris was 76mpg.

However, a few of the diesel cars on the event, including a Renault Clio Eco2 and Skoda Fabia Greenline used even less fuel with the driver reporting more than 100mpg.

Other vehicles in the event included the new Nissan Leaf, a Volkswagen Golf Blue-e-motion prototype (overall winner according to the judges), three hydrogen fuel cell cars, and even a battery electric-converted 1999-registered MGF.
