ELECTRONIC toll manufacturers are being asked to join forces under the European Commission-backed RCI project, which aims to ensure new road charging equipment is inter-operable across the European Union (EU).
The aim is to ensure that drivers from any EU country can operate e-tolls, a key issue given that Brussels wants clear common Europe rules regarding such systems. A commission note said it wanted RCI to develop freely available computerised systems ‘that contribute to the convergence of future tolling systems and the evolution of existing ones’.
Coordinator and intelligent transport public-private partnership ERTICO recently staged a workshop promoting a RCI suppliers’ consortium developing mobile on-board tolling equipment. *http://www.ertico.com/en/subprojects/rci/home/
