Tesco Dotcom has won the prestigious Fleet Initiative of the Year award at the 2010 Fleet News awards.

Tesco Dotcom has been in existence for about 12 years and has been driven by a desire to be the best.

From humble beginnings with just one van, it is now the world’s biggest online retailer, with an annual turnover in excess of £1.6 billion.

Throughout its remarkable growth, the senior management team – headed by Keith Price – has analysed, developed and benchmarked key parameters and processes to allow the business to grow in a robust, controlled and sustainable fashion.
During this process it was clear that prompt and decisive action was needed to reduce its employees’ exposure to occupational road risk, while executing a business plan to reduce the spiralling costs of running, maintaining and insuring the van fleet.

Key to fundamental change in working practices was the inception of an in-house driver training and development team.

They consist of fully qualified driving instructors, advanced driving examiners, road collision investigators and a technician member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.

This training team has helped reduce Tesco Dotcom van damage by 90% and traffic offences by 60%.

Judges’ comments
"A significant investment into a comprehensive and clear occupational road risk management initiative. Tesco enjoys an enviable and deserved track record and reputation for safety, training and duty of care. This initiative further underlines that commitment."
