The use of fleet telematics data is predicted to grow significantly over the next three years, according to the latest Arval Mobility Observatory Barometer.

Research shows 19% of businesses operating vehicles are currently using the data from telematics and that a further 44% are considering adopting it within the next three years.

Interestingly, the figures indicate more enthusiasm among car fleets (19% adopting and 48% considering) than for vans (18% adopting and 35% considering).

John Peters, head of Arval Mobility Observatory in the UK, said: “What we are seeing here is a relatively high level of current usage for telematics at slightly less than one in five car and van fleets but a very high level of interest for the future.

“We believe there are probably a number of trends powering this, from wanting to use the technology to help control costs and maximise operational efficiency, through to a growing awareness of the potential of emerging connected vehicle services.”

The current rates of use for car and van fleets both showed a 3% increase on when the same question was included in 2024’s Arval Mobility Observatory Barometer.

“This potentially confirms that the enthusiasm for telematics being seen in our research is probably resulting in some increased adoption, even if not to the dramatic extent that the data suggests,” explained Peters.

Overall, results for telematics in the UK for the Arval Mobility Observatory Barometer were slightly ahead of both European (14% using and 47% considering) and global averages (15% using and 47% considering).

“The UK does tend to make more use of fleet technology that most other countries but the differences being seen for telematics are not too dramatic,” said Peters. “They suggest that telematics is having an impact for fleets just about everywhere.”
