This metric shows the average age of a vehicle entering a workshop for maintenance recorded on the 1link Service Network platform and is therefore a good indicator of the average age of cars and vans in the fleet parc.
Before the pandemic, when this dataset begins in January 2020, the figures were 2.40 years for cars and 3.14 for vans.
This increased significantly from around the onset of Covid in April 2020, and maintained an upward trend through 2021 and 2022, peaking in late 2023 and early 2024 at 3.07 years for cars and 3.75 years for vans.
During the remainder of last year, there were consistent downward lines through to December’s 3.39 years for vans and 2.84 years for cars to – the lowest months for both since around mid-2022.
However, during 2025, we have seen a slight reversal of this long-term trend, rising to 2.95 years for cars in March while also hitting 3.5 years for vans in January and staying above 3.42 years since. Our view is that it’s probably too early to say whether we are now going to see ongoing increases, but it will be interesting to see how the picture develops in our next 1link Index.
