Shell scientists and engineers then apply their research and experience to manipulate the formula further to create advanced fuels that are designed to work and interact with the engine to help deliver different benefits.

For example, Fuelsave is designed to be more economical while Shell V-Power targets performance.

“It’s just like making a cake, adding ingredients to get the right mixture of ingredients that work at the heart of the engine to help improve engine efficiency,” says Smith.

“Special detergents and Shell Efficiency Improvers are examples of ingredients that are added to help improve engine efficiency, thus helping drivers to save fuel.”

Saving fuel

As well as the fuels, Shell has a number of initiatives all focused on helping customers to save fuel, including best practice tips and the annual Shell Eco Marathon.

Last year Shell achieved a Guinness World Record for the largest fuel efficiency tutorial around the world where it engaged with the public to further spread the message about driving economically.

“There are so many variables that affect fuel economy, from driving style to weather conditions and the type and condition of the vehicle itself. We want to help drivers get the most out of every drop of their fuel,” says Smith.

Shell FuelSave fuels

Launched in the UK in 2010 and available in both petrol and diesel, Shell Fuelsave is now available in 15 markets globally and is designed to help customers save fuel at no extra cost.

“It is about encouraging customers to try it for themselves and incorporating driving tips to get the most out of it," says Smith.

The key message is that there are fuels out there that are designed to save fuel at no extra cost at the forecourt."
