Parallels were drawn between the shipping industry and fleets in the UK during a presentation by Michael Collins, general manager, export department, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).

He outlined that although the company’s shipping fleet was growing, the more recent additions have reduced CO2 emissions compared to earlier versions.

Collins said MSC touched a broad range of goods being transported, including automotive, beverages, steel and chemicals, recyclables, electrical and food and farming.

He said the company, which had more than 50 owned trucks in the UK with access to more than 400, also had a number of weekly feeder vessels to regional ports in the UK as well as dedicated rail services to Felixstowe to help reduce road mileage.

“Our strategy is about bringing our cargo closer to its destination,” said Collins. “If we can do that, we can cut down road mileage, reduce congestion and emissions.”
