GOODYEAR has introduced run-flat tyre technology at its Technical Center test circuit in Luxembourg. The extended mobility tyre, which allows drivers to continue with a flat tyre for about 50 miles at speeds of up to 50mph, is fitted to standard wheels and will be available as a replacement tyre throughout Europe in 1988.

The aim is to allow drivers to reach a repair centre or their destination before having to change a tyre. The first EMT tyres to reach the market will be Goodyear's high-performance Eagle F1 GS-D2 in six sizes, but by mid-1998 the company will market a range of EMT tyres for most popular cars sold in Europe.

Tyres incorporating EMT technology look set to cost between 15 and 20% more than non-EMT tyres, depending on size and type. Goodyear is also working with low pressure warning system suppliers in order to make an affordable unit available to EMT replacement buyers.
