TOYOTA has bolstered the Picnic line-up with the introduction of a turbodiesel derivative with the accent on value for money. The 2.2 indirect injection unit is the first diesel engine to be fitted to a Toyota people-carrier in the UK. Although eclipsed in the economy stakes by more modern units, the Picnic TD carries an extremely competitive price tag.

The engine generates 86bhp at 4,000rpm and peak torque of 151lb-ft at 2,000rpm, giving it a 0-62mph time of 13.9 seconds and a top speed of 100mph. Fuel economy averages 36.2mpg. The £16,655 on-the-road GS base model gets six seats fully-equipped with lap and diagonal seatbelts, electric windows, tamper-proof child locks and driver-controlled window locks. The £18,075 GL gets ABS, air conditioning and twin airbags.
