Coupe makes new niche for Proton

PROTON has unveiled the first in a series of niche market vehicles - a two-door coupe based on the Compact - in Malaysia, just weeks after a ground-breaking deal saw the company soar into December's UK fleet sales top ten.

A decision is expected from the Malaysian manufacturer soon on a possible UK launch for the performance coupe, previewed at the British International Motor Show in October.

Proton hopes to find a ready market in Britain for the 1.8-litre twin cam 16-valve coupe, which offers a top speed of 130mph and 0 - 60 in 8.7secs, and is looking to follow it up with a series of other niche sector vehicles over the next four years including an MPV and a 4x4 sports utility vehicle.
