ESSEX Police has taken delivery of 12 Ford Scorpio 24 valve cars with specially tuned rear suspensions designed to provide optimum performance and handling with consistently high boot loads.

The new race-bred suspension, designed for Ford by motorsport specialist Gordon Spooner Engineering, is standard specification for all Ford traffic patrol cars bought by Essex police. Many police forces are understood to be actively assessing the new suspension, and also factory-fitted underbody protection to prevent their vehicles being damaged when passing over 'sleeping policemen' road humps at speed.

The Scorpios are powered by the 2.9i Cosworth engine with automatic transmission and have a top speed of 140 mph and a 0-60 time of eight seconds. In addition 11 Mondeo 24v estate cars have also been delivered.
