THE vast majority of 'clocked' cars have their speedos altered by private motorists, according to new statistics from Equifax HPI. Four out of five clocked vehicles came from private sellers while 14% came from the trade and just 6% from auctions.

The findings come at a time when an increasing proportion of fleet operators are cleaning up their act by providing mileage details of their vehicles to the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association Vehicle Mileage Database.

The database now includes some 850,000 mileage records on vehicles leased by BVRLA members and the association confidently expects the register to top a million entries by the end of the year.
