DRIVERS who want to avoid the queues but can't stretch to in-car navigation systems will shortly be able to purchase special route cards to help divert them round the traffic. The first in a series of maps detailing alternative routes to the major motorways is Routes Round the M25. The 64-page booklet includes routes from one junction to the next, both clockwise and anti-clockwise.

Drivers set their trip meters to zero on leaving the motorway, follow the instructions to the next junction and re-join, or continue following the instructions to the next intersection. All routes use A-roads as opposed to country routes or urban 'rat-runs' and, on average, the motorist needs to follow just five instructions to reach the next junction.

The guides cost £4 each and are available from garage forecourts or direct from publisher Give Way on 0500 050027. Alternative routes to the A1(M), M2, M3, and M4 will be available in a few weeks.
