VOLKSWAGEN will have the millennium Bug with the arrival in the UK next year of the new Beetle which made its UK debut at the Motor Show. However, demand for the all-new Beetle has been so great following its world debut at January's Detroit Motor Show that from next spring Volkswagen UK is to take delivery of 1,000 left-hand-drive models powered by either 2.0-litre 115bhp or TDI 90bhp engines.

A higher specification Beetle will be launched with the introduction of right-hand-drive models towards the end of next year powered by Volkswagen's 2.3-litre V5 150bhp engine. Exact pricing has still to be determined but it is estimated that a 2.0-litre left-hand-drive Beetle will cost abut £16,200. However, a Volkswagen spokesman said he expected prices to be below those of an equally-specified Golf GTi three-door.

Standard equipment on left- and right-hand-drive models will include ABS brakes, twin front and side airbags, electric front windows, electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors, remote control central locking, alarm, air conditioning and 16in alloy wheels.
