Insurance merger 'will benefit policyholders'

THE £14.9 billion proposed merger of Commercial Union and General Accident should benefit policyholders, according to the insurance giants.

They claim the pre-tax cost base of the two companies will be cut by £225 million within 24 months of the completion of the merger, scheduled for the end of June 1998, which will create CGU.
