RADICAL changes to alternative fuels for the London Borough of Southwark's fleet only came about as a result of months of research and tests on several different options. The green-conscious council has now vowed to have its entire 300-strong fleet running on alternative fuels by the year 2000, and already has 68 vehicles running on liquefied petroleum gas.
John Whitlow, head of corporate purchasing at the council, is now advising fleet managers at both local authorities and companies to consider certain issues before diving in at the 'greener' deep end. Whitlow warns companies to ask the 10 before plumping for an alternative fuel:
- What is the additional cost?
- How limited is the infrastructure?
- Does a conversion breach the manufacturer's warranty conditions?
- What are the extra maintenance costs?
- Is there any idea of residual values?
- How reliable will it be in five years?
- How good is the environmental performance?
- Will it meet Government legislation standards?
- Are there any economic benefits such as a freeze on duty or tax reductions?
- Is it in line for Vehicle Excise Duty concessions?
