SIX environmental transport projects have been presented with the first Foresight Clear Zones awards for innovation in beating traffic pollution and congestion.

Sponsored by the DETR, the awards aim to encourage businesses, scientific community and local authorities to work together in improving the environment in urban areas.

The projects were judged on the use of technology, improvement to the environment, working in partnership and monitoring and evaluating and awards went to: Leicester - air quality and traffic monitoring; City of London - traffic and environmental zone, restricted access for general traffic; Winchester - movement and access plan; Edinburgh - improvements to bus services; London Transport - reducing bus emissions; Camden - improving the environmental effects of bus transport, including the use of alternative fuels.
