THE London Borough of Southwark has been named as running the cleanest fleet in Britain at a new national green fleet awards ceremony. The Green Fleet Awards, sponsored by Calor Autogas, gave the top prize to Southwark for reducing its fleet size and working to convert the rest of its fleet to alternative fuels or low sulphur diesel by the year 2000.

It has purchased a fleet of more than 60 vehicles to run on LPG and a further eight electric vehicles which at the time made it the largest publicly-owned 'green' fleet in the country. It has vowed to convert its entire 300-vehicle fleet to run on alternative fuels by April next year.

The London boroughs of Sutton and Wandsworth were joint runners-up and third place was taken by Hampshire Constabulary. An innovation award was shared by Leicester City Council and Merseytravel.
