THE Frankfurt International Motor Show, the biggest event of its kind in the world, begins next week and 36 vehicles will be making world debuts. The unveilings come in all shapes and sizes, from the mini-MPV Audi A2 through to the new XS sport activity 4x4 from BMW and the space-age executive offering from Renault with its Avantime. The growth in the MPV market is set to continue with Kia, Mazda and Daewoo all unveiling new models for the UK.

A strong environmental theme will also dominate much of the show, with several developments in new technology diesel engines. These include the expansion of Peugeot's common rail HDi to its whole range, the introduction of the HDi to more models in the Citroen line-up and Volkswagen's new PD Passat, offering improved performance and economy over the existing diesel engine.

These diesel developments will be rivalled for the environmental title by hybrid petrol/electric cars from Honda with its Insight, and Toyota with Prius, both of which will be on UK roads by next year.
