SKODA revealed a 'hotshot' version at Geneva of its all-new Fabia supermini which has just gone on sale in the UK. Although at the show to gauge reaction, the concept was a precursor to the 2001 launch of the 2.0-litre 120bhp RSi Fabia which will become the range's sporting flagship.

Initially Fabia has an engine range of 1.4 68bhp and 1.4 100bhp and a 1.9 SDi 64bhp diesel unit available in a choice of Classic, Comfort and Elegance trims starting at £7,599 on-the-road. However, a 1.0-litre 50bhp petrol engine and a 1.9-litre turbodiesel unit will follow shortly and by the end of the year a 1.4 75bhp unit will have been added, with the 2.0-litre due next year, offering a 122mph top speed.

The Fabia's platform will be used for the next generation Volkswagen Polo and SEAT Ibiza and the manufacturer says the new Fabia is significantly larger than rivals such as the Toyota Yaris, Peugeot 206, Ford Fiesta, Fiat Punto and Renault Clio.
