GM sees profitability increase

GENERAL Motors saw profitability in its European division increase to $221 million in the first quarter of this year (1999: $174 million) due to sales increasing 6%.

It warned that pricing remained 'fiercely competitive'. Worldwide after-tax profits were marginally lower year-on-year at $1.78 billion (1999: $1.82 billion).
