WESTMINSTER City Council's five-year programme to clean up its fleet and encourage its contractors to use clean technology helped the authority win the Green Fleet Award 2000. The council began by looking at its 120-vehicle fleet calculating its emissions, and providing more environmentally friendly alternatives such as electric, compressed natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas.

Westminster's fleet now includes 16 LPG vehicles, one CNG Ford Transit van, 22 minibuses and a hydrogen powered fuel cell vehicle for use in its parks and gardens. All its remaining diesels use ultra-low sulphur diesel.
