VAUXHALL is to launch a series of innovative models outside its traditional vehicle heartland as it seeks to capitalise on the success of the Zafira MPV and the potential success of the VX220. General Motors chief executive Rick Wagoner said the manufacturer was focusing on product and innovation and he admitted that in Europe Vauxhall/Opel had to strengthen its product portfolio 'outside our traditional comfort zones'.

'We are pushing hard not just with core products but we need to repeat the Zafira success,' he said. At the launch of General Motors' Detroit show concept cars Wagoner said he wanted to see brands redefine segments and create new ones. 'Our product strategy is to be innovative and to be fast. Over the next few years there will be many new introductions in General Motors' product portfolio. We will be the industry's innovation leader.'

The flexibility of the seven-seat Zafira could be repeated in different size vehicles and Vauxhall may also look to expand its 2+2 coupe offerings. A variety of vehicles is expected to spin off the new Vivaro light commercial vehicle due to be launched in the summer.
