STRONG concern that self-registrations are occurring well in excess of official figures have been raised by Glass's Information Services as the latest details from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders are published.

In November, the entire car industry pre-registered just 339 cars, with Ford responsible for 202 of those, according to the SMMT. Adrian Rushmore, chief car editor of Glass's Guide, said in his January editorial: 'It would appear that some manufacturers have registered more cars for their own use on their management and press fleets. There have also been instances of new car sales, where the supplier has returned unwanted cars by prior arrangement. While this does not contravene the Department of Trade and Industry Order, it is not in the spirit of the law.'
