POLICE fleets are about to get their hands on one of the fastest cars in production as a rapid response vehicle. Mitsubishi has prepared a demonstrator of the 280bhp Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI, made famous by Tommi Makinen's exploits in the World Rally Championship.

The demonstrator complies with all police requirements and could be ordered by police forces after Mitsubishi gains ISO 9002 approval. Matthew Cheyne, general manager for fleet and used sales at Mitsubishi, said: 'We have developed this demonstrator in response to enquiries from police forces throughout the UK that are interested in having a 'hero' vehicle which no-one will try to outrun. The Evo VI with its reputation fits the bill perfectly and of course, it is financially viable as well.'

Police forces have shown an interest in rally-inspired road cars for high performance traffic work, and Humberside police replaced a Volvo V70 T5 and Ford Escort Cosworth with two Prodrive-modified Subaru Impreza Turbos three years ago. A Mitsubishi spokesman said: 'It's not about speed - it's about image and this is good for the Mitsubishi brand.' The Evo VI has four-wheel drive, accelerates from 0-60mph in less than five seconds and will reach 140mph flat out.
