GOVERNMENT plans to invest £60 billion in the road network in the next 10 years will only improve journey times by seconds, a report claims. In many cases, travel conditions will worsen and traffic is set to grow in both town and country.

According to the findings of 'Running to Stand Still', from The Council for the Protection of Rural England, many journeys will take only one second less per mile in 2010 than they currently do. Copies cost £20 and are available from CPRE at 25 Buckingham Palace Road, London, SW1W 0PP.
