VOLKSWAGEN is to double the size of its Passat recall from 22,500 to 45,000 models in the UK because of renewed fears the steering rod may lock up. The move extends a recall that began in August 1999 when the steering rods were tested and changed, and takes the total recall figure to 300,000 models worldwide.

The news follows Audi's decision to recall a further 18,000 A4s, A6s and A8s in the UK because of fears that the track rod ends of the front axle may leak, causing unnecessary wear. The decision takes the total number of Audi recalls to 38,000.

Work has been completed on 60% of all Volkswagen or Audi recall models but drivers concerned about the recall are asked to contact their local retailer or telephone Audi on 0800 699 888 or Volkswagen on 0800 711 811.
