AVIS is to introduce Trafficmaster's Smartnav 'intelligent navigation system' into its rental fleet, in a move it claims as a UK first.

The system, in trial exclusively with Avis, will be used in 100 Vauxhall Omegas. Test sites will include Edinburgh Airport, Glasgow Airport, Birmingham Airport and Luton Airport.

Drivers push a button to tell a personal assistant where they want to go. The route is then calculated and sent to the system in the car, making use of current road traffic data. It will also re-route mid-journey if there are problems on the road ahead. There will be a special introductory pilot charge for the system of £5 per day per car or £25 per car for use of the system across a seven-day rental.

Avis fleet director Carolyn Emberton said: 'Smartnav will take the stress out of driving as the system simplifies journeys. Avis customers can be confident that by using Smartnav-equipped cars, they will arrive safely at their destination.'
