FLEET drivers in Wiltshire cannot fail to notice the launch of a scheme designed to slow motorists down – the removal of white lines from the middle of major roads. Three newly-laid miles of road in Wiltshire are without central white lines, although they still have markings at the side.

It is part of a Wiltshire County Council initiative that aims to create a feeling of 'uncertainty' among drivers, making them more cautious.

The council commented that it would not remove white lines from existing roads and that, at present, the initiative would be limited to five roads in the area, most of them in 30mph limit zones.
