May 2000: GLOBAL transport and fleet management company Ryder System has launched a major expansion drive in Europe that will include acquisitions and joint ventures.

The company has reorganised its European management team to spearhead its growth plans, appointing Jos Hessels as vice-president and managing director of Europe.

'The management team looks forward to bringing the full force of Ryder's global capabilities to customers in Europe and is committed to developing the business through a programme of organic growth, acquisitions and partnership initiatives,' he said.

'It is our intention to provide customers with the most comprehensive range of services from one source, whether it is vehicle rental or the most complex of integrated logistics operations.'

Hessels also announced plans both to integrate Ryder's logistics and transportation services and to integrate its UK and continental operations.

This will see Peter Backhouse replace Tracy Leinbach as managing director of Ryder's transportation services in the UK and Germany.
