BP has launched what it claims to be the cleanest petrol and diesel fuels available in the UK.

Sulphur-free petrol and sulphur-free diesel, which the European Union is demanding at all petrol stations from 2008, will trial at 18 sites around the Edinburgh area.

To be labelled free of the pollutant, the fuel must have less than 10 parts per million of sulphur in it.

Unveiling the new product, Scottish Deputy Minister for Enterprise, Transport and Lifelong Learning, Lewis Macdonald, added: 'The Scottish Executive is committed to improving the environment in which we live and this initiative by BP is an excellent example to other industries.'
