Diesel Yaris joins economical club

TOYOTA launched its diesel Yaris this week to join the growing ranks of ultra-economical diesel superminis.

The car uses a 1.4-litre D-4D common rail engine developing 74bhp at 4,000rpm and 125lb-ft of torque between 2,000 and 2,800rpm, and the unit is also available in the Yaris Verso.

It will reach 62mph from rest in 12.9 seconds, while the Verso will do the same in 13.8 seconds. Three-door hatchback variants achieve 67.3mpg on the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of 113g/km, while five-door cars are rated at 64.2mpg and 117g/km. Verso models are good for 56.5mpg and 133g/km.

Prices range from £8,395 for the Yaris S 3-door to £12,395 for the Yaris Verso GLS.
